‘The referee gave them a goal,’ Harry Maguire says in a rant following England’s 1-1 draw with North Macedonia over a penalty call

The Three Lions’ qualifying campaign came to a dismal close in Skopje with a stalemate, despite already securing their spot in next summer’s Euro 2024.

Just before halftime, North Macedonia took the lead after a penalty was given for a foul on Bojan Miovski inside the box by England debutant Rico Lewis. The teenager from Manchester City leaped to head the ball, but he barely touched the striker as he did so.

After hearing from VAR, referee Filip Glova was instructed to examine the incident on the pitch-side monitor and then point from the spot. Initially, Glova waved play on.

The penalty was saved by Jordan Pickford, but the rebound was smashed in by Enis Bardhi.

Coming off the bench to assist in forcing an own goal just before the hour mark, Harry Kane helped England salvage a point.

Maguire, a defender for Manchester United, was enraged by the call. He had a fortunate escape in the first half when he knocked Elif Elmas over, but the judgment still went against him.

“It was a tough game,” he told Sky Sports. We conceded a goal, or rather, the referee gifted it to them. It’s tough to come back from behind here.

But the guys showed tremendous courage; that side is young, and we fought hard; another day, we cruised to a comfortable victory.

We were in complete control of the game the whole way through; sure, we were sloppy with the ball at one point (myself included), but we’re getting better.

He went оn tо sаy, “It wаs а crаzy decisiоn” оn the penаlty cаll. I’ve been sаying this fоr mоnths: it’s mаking defenseless fоes’ lives wоrse.

The players we’re playing against are top-tier, and we’re unable to do anything like put our arms up, make contact, or move about.

The difficulty level is rising. I thought Rico responded brilliantly, and he went on to have a great game, even though it was never a penalty.
