Why Erik ten Hag swung out on the touchline to scold Anthony Martial during Manchester United’s match against Newcastle

Rasmus Hojlund came on for the struggling Frenchman after just sixty-one minutes of the second half at St. James’ Park.

With only one goal and an assist in twelve Premier League games, Martial has had a disappointing season.

During Saturday’s cоnfrоntatiоn, which saw Martial аrgue back, Ten Hag was seen yelling at the player. The Dutchman addressed the situation during his post-match press conference.

“It has nothing to do with Antony Martial,” Ten Hag stated. It’s all about the squad. I made an effort to motivate the team so that we could respond.

We were going through a rough patch right now. It is natural to be slightly more forceful when coaching.

Martial has now had two underwhelming performances in a row; following the 3-3 draw with Galatasaray, United icon Peter Schmeichel blasted him.

When Hojlund came off the bench, a lot of the pressure from up front went away, Schmeichel said in an interview with CBS Sports.

There used to be a player up front who worked extremely hard for the squad, but now there’s none of that since the one he (Ten Hag) put in doesn’t do anything.

“And that leaves the other team with plenty of chances to distribute the ball.”
