Tom Holland stated that he will only proceed with a fourth “Spider-Man” film if the team involved can do the character justice during a recent press conference with the Critics Choice Association (via Collider). In addition to participating in Marvel blockbusters like “Avengers: Endgame,” Holland has portrayed Peter Parker/Spider-Man in three stand-alone films: “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021).
“All I can say is that we have been having active discussions about what a fourth version of my character might look like,” Holland said to the media. It’s another matter entirely whether or not we can manage to do the character justice.
The actor went on, “I feel very protective over Spider-Man.” “I want to preserve his legacy, and I feel really fortunate that we were able to work on a franchise that, in my opinion, is quite uncommon—one that got better and more successful with each film. I hereby promise not to create another one just for the pleasure of doing so. The character’s time must be well-worth it.
Holland’s stand-alone “Spider-Man” movies brought in over $1 billion at the box office, and “No Way Home,” which took in $1.92 billion to become the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time (without accounting for inflation), almost crossed the $2 billion threshold. Executives undoubtedly want Holland to return as Spider-Man on the big screen given Marvel Studios’ poor recent film office performance (“The Marvels” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” both failed this year).
The president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, revealed to Entertainment Weekly in February that Holland was writing the fourth “Spider-Man” film at the time. At that point, he said, “All I will say is that we have the story.” Our writers are only now starting to put our huge ideas on paper for that.
The WGA strike forced a halt to writing on the script for “Spider-Man 4,” as Holland stated to Variety in June. “We’ve put the meetings on pause in solidarity with the writers.” Although there have been several conversations, they are still in the very early phases.
Considering Holland’s recent remarks, it would seem that talks for “Spider-Man 4” have resumed since the end of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. There has been no formal announcement or release date for Marvel’s fourth “Spider-Man” film starring Holland.
Will we produce another film? “Of course we are,” franchise producer Amy Pascal stated at the “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” premiere in the summer to Variety. “We are in the process, but nobody is working because of the writers’ strike. We’re all supporting each other, and we’ll start as soon as they gather themselves.
“No Way Home” brought Tom Holland together with fellow Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield for the first time on the big screen, which was a major factor in the movie’s box office success. The three actors have all indicated a desire to reprise their roles as Spider-Man, which would undoubtedly boost Marvel’s box office revenue.
According to Maguire, “if these guys called me and said, ‘Would you show up tonight to hang out and goof around?’ or ‘Would you show up to do this movie or read a scene or do a Spider-Man thing?’ it would be a ‘yes!'” (available for purchase now), Why wouldn’t I want to do that, then?
