In a tҺrilling Premier League match on Wednesday night, Manchester United defeated Chelsea 2-1.
After a strong first half, the Red Devils—who hadn’t defeated a top-half team prior to the game—controlled extended stretches of the game and dominated the second half. United had 28 shots in total that evening, with two important goals coming from Scott McTominay.
After a hectic first forty-five minutes at Old Trafford, in which United dominated, their own carelessness gave Chelsea opportunities to score on the break.
Bruno Fernandes, Ramus Hojlund, and McTominay gave the Red Devils strong early openings, and Enzo Fernandez’s foul on Antony in the eighth minute earned them a penalty. However, Fernandes targeted Robert Sanchez directly with his spot-kιck.
However, United made a strong comeback and scored in the 19th minute. Alejandro Garnacho centered the ball for Harry Maguire to shoot after Fernandes and Garnacho worked well together down the left. After his shot was stopped, McTominay gathered the rebound and sent the ball into the Chelsea goal.
After managing an anticipated goals of 2.78 in the first half, Erik ten Hag’s team put on an entertaining оffensive show, and Sanchez reacted instinctively to keep out the header when he could have had another. On defense, though, things were quite different, as Chelsea was able to exploit the red shirts with ease. While Nicolas Jackson had a one-on-one opportunity that was smothered by Andre Onana, Mykhailo Mudryk came dangerously close to scoring twice and once struck the post.
Palmer got the ball inside the box and, after a little dribble, shot an attempt in between United’s center-backs and past Onana to tie the score right before halftime. However, United disregarded such warnings.
With the exception of an early header from Jackson that went over, United, however, were far more steady in the second half and created all of the opportunities. Sanchez stopped McTominay’s header, Antony saw a blocked attempt spin wide, and Garnacho cut in but missed.
However, United earned a well-earned lead through McTominay’s head for the second time throughout the match. Maguire, Sergio Reguilon, and Garnacho worked nicely together, and McTominay finished off the latter’s precise cross to the back post. A few moments later, the midfield player should have had a hat-trιck, but his left-footed shot went wide.
Reece James came back to deny Garnacho’s initial breakaway attempt, and the teenager missed the mark with a shot inside the box. Garnacho is a persistent threаt down the left.
Chelsea made an attempt to equalize, with James missing a shot at the back post, Fernandez flashing a header wide, and Armando Broja coming the closest with his header hitting the post. Happy post-match scenes were witnessed at Old Trafford as United managed to hold on to a well-earned three points.
These are our ratings for the United players…
1. Andre Onana—six
did a good job of coming out and stifling Jackson’s one-on-one opportunity in the first half despite not having many saves to make.
2. Diogo Dalot (seven)
exhibited strong оffensive play and made some excellent passes to Antony.
Harry Maguire, aged eight
Maguire, who had just won Player of the Month, played solid defense and produced some excellent interceptions to stop Chelsea’s assaults. He also contributed to United keeping their strong line.
4. 6 (off 46) for Victor Lindelof
had a quite quiet first half; although, Palmer’s goal could have been performed a little better. Presumably, a knock replaced Lindelof.
5. Luke Shaw: 6 began as a left-back before switching to the midfield. Another strong performance from United’s number 23.
6. Amrabat, Sofyan VII
made a couple mistakes in the first half, but improved greatly and made some well-timed tackles in the second. United benefited greatly from his position and ability to move the ball forward.
7. Scott McTominay: 8 With his brace, McTominay sealed the three points as his long runs fueled United’s menacing onslaught.
8. Bruno Fernandes—7—made many passes into the final third after rebounding nicely from his missed penalty. Fernandes performed admirably outside of possession and relished the exciting event.
9. Antony: 7 Put in a lot of effort and worked nonstop. It was a solid performance even though he still needs work on the end product.
10. (off 83) Rasmus Hojlund – 6
His strongest work comes off the ball, as he consistently put pressure on Chelsea’s defenders. Hojlund attempted an early shot, which Sanchez stopped.
11. Alejandro Garnacho: eight (off ninety-two)
worked effectively in tandem with Fernandes down the left, putting in some risky crosses that included both of McTominay’s goals.
12. On page 46, Sergio Reguilon, 7
advanced and supported the attacks by the United States. Reguilon did not reveаl much in the rear either.
