‘I only joined Liverpool because Premier League rivals Man Utd turned down transfer’
There is a solid reason why the number of players who have moved directly between Manchester United and Liverpool is relatively small.
It takes a courageous individual to move clubs in the midst of the ongoing competition between the two groups, which dates back to the Industrial Revolution. Paul Ince, a former England midfielder who spent two years at Inter Milan between his time in each club, was acutely aware of the rivalry between the two sides in the ’90s.
Ince, 56, played for Manchester United for six seasons before leaving for Italy in 1995. He returned to Anfield a few years later, this time in red. If Manchester United had been more interested in reuniting with the West Ham youth product, he may have turned his back on the Merseysiders and returned to the Theatre of Dreams.Ince disclosed to talkSPORT that he was reluctant to leave Manchester United when he departed for Inter Milan. Upon my return from Inter Milan, Manchester United were the first to reject me. I had the option to return to Manchester United, but they declined to accept me.
“Whether I would have gone back I don’t know, but all I know is I had two years at Inter, another three years left on my contract, obviously the family situation was difficult so we came back.”
