The ‘historic’ jerseys that Lionel Messi wore during Argentina’s 2022 World Cup winning run just for $7.8 million

The six jerseys that soccer sensation Lionel Messi wore during Argentina’s triumphant run at the 2018 World Cup fetched $7.8 million on Thursday, according to auction house Sotheby’s.

The shirts, which were worn by Argentina during one of their 2022 FIFA World Cup matches in Qatar, fetched the highest price for a piece of sports memorabilia this year, according to Sotheby’s.

Argentina won its third World Cup with a penalty shootout victory over France following a 3-3 tie in the final.

According to Brahm Wachter, head of modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, “These historic shirts are not only a tangible reminder of one of the most important moments in the history of sports, but are principally connected to the pinnacle moment in the career of the most decorated football player in history.” Thus, the statement.

The online auction, which lasted two weeks and concluded on Thursday, featured the shirts displayed in Sotheby’s offices in New York.

The identity of the successful bidder remained confidential.

The UNICAS Project, spearheaded by Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children’s Hospital and supported by the Leo Messi Foundation, aims to aid children with rare diseases; Sotheby’s has announced that a portion of the auction’s revenues would go toward this cause.

Messi, who is now 36 years old and plays for Inter Miami of the Major League Soccer, was a Barcelona player for 17 years. On eight separate occasions, he has been named the game’s best player—the Ballon d’Or—setting a new record.

The Messi shirts fell short of Sotheby’s expectations of setting a new auction record for game-worn sports memorabilia.

Last year, Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey set a new record for a game-worn piece of sports memorabilia when it sold for $10.1 million at Sotheby’s in New York.
