Even though Andre Onana’s performance in goal for Manchester United has been subpar thus far, the goalie is adamant that his class will shine through once his “temporary” slump ends. Although he was instrumental in Inter’s UEFA Champions League run last season and had great success while playing for Ajax, the Cameroon international has found it difficult to perform to his full potential since moving to England.
Even though the Cameroon international goalkeeper Andre Onana has made some infamous mistakes since joining Manchester United from Inter in the summer, he is adamant that he will get back to his best.
Last year, Onana was a standout for Inter as they made an incredible run in the UEFA Champions League. United paid him £43.8 million after he helped the Italian giants reach their first final since 2010. His goaltending and excellent distribution were crucial in that run.
Since Erik ten Haag and Onana had worked together before at Ajax, this felt like a perfect opportunity for them to reunite.
But Onana concedes that he has had a rough go of it in the Premier League thus far.
Onana acknowledged his dismal performance in an interview with Sky Sports conducted just before Sunday’s goalless draw with Liverpool.
He commented: “If I have to speak about my season so far for Manchester United, I am not happy because I know I can do much, much better, I’ve done it and I know I will do it better than what is happening now.”
Despite their best efforts, Onana and his staff are currently experiencing a rocky patch. No matter how tough things become, Onana is certain he can make a comeback.
We are not in a favorable moment, he declared. Hopefully, things will improve shortly. Listen, you’re trying to tell me that the best goalkeeper from last season’s Champions League can become the worst in the world in just six months? Not cool. Absolutely not.
Onana, relying on a cliche, implied that his class will emerge at some point.
“Everything is temporary,” he stated. It will be OK, I’m sure of it. If not now, then tomorrow, and if that doesn’t work, then the day after tomorrow.
While Onana isn’t the only goalkeeper to have trouble adjusting to the Premier League’s rugged style, his erratic starting lineup hasn’t helped matters. Due to form problems and injuries, Onana has played behind different back lines in most matches.
Prior to the draw at Anfield, United had dropped three of their previous four matches, and with a midweek loss to Bayern Munich, the three-time European champions were relegated to last place in their Champions League group.
United backup Altay Bayindir will likely start in Onana’s place as the Cameroonian international prepares for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Onana is scheduled to miss a number of United matches due to international service.
