The Kop will have an ideal left-footed center-back as Hincapie pushed for January Exit

According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, Bayer Leverkusen’s defender, Piero Hincapie, is reportedly pushing for a departure in the January transfer window due to concerns about playing time. Hincapie, who has mostly served as a substitute this season, has started only two games for the current German league leaders.

Liverpool FC is said to be keeping an eye on him, having been linked with Hincapie during the summer transfer window. However, Plettenberg notes that Leverkusen’s preferred center-backs are heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, suggesting that Hincapie might see increased playing time. Despite this potential opportunity, there might be challenges in affecting his transfer value.

The persistent rumors surrounding Hincapie’s availability stem from Liverpool’s reported search for a left-footed center-back, especially following the pursuit of Chelsea’s Levi Colwill. Hincapie’s versatility, as he can also play at left-back, aligns with Liverpool’s squad-building needs. The recent season-ending injury to Joël Matip further emphasizes the need for additional defensive reinforcements, particularly at center-back.

While a January move for Hincapie appears unlikely, the possibility of Liverpool pursuing him in the summer remains uncertain. The squad currently has few gaps, mainly in the center-back and defensive midfielder positions. The focus on securing a top-tier defensive midfielder, such as Aurélien Tchouaméni or Moisés Caicedo, could impact the club’s budget for additional signings.

Considering Hincapie’s contract runs until 2027, his valuation might present financial challenges. The involvement of his agent, Manuel Sierra, who also represents Caicedo, adds another layer of complexity. The evolving nature of this rumor will be worth monitoring beyond the winter transfer window.
