Enzo Fernandez spotted in tears after Chelsea secure Carabao Cup semi-final place. Enzo Fernandez had to be withdrawn with a suspected thigh injury during the first half of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup quarter-final tie against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge.
After Chelsea advanced to the Carabao Cup semi-finals, Enzo Fernandez was seen crying at full time. The Argentine midfielder had to be replaced during the first half of the Stamford Bridge match against Newcastle due to what appeared to be a thigh injury.
Callum Wilson took advantage of a mistake made by Benoit Badiashile in defence to give the visitors the lead. In order to force a penalty shootout, Mykhailo Mudryk, the substitute, equalized the score in the 92nd minute by seizing a loose ball inside the penalty box and shooting it past Martin Dubravka.
The duration of Fernandez’s expected absence is uncertain, as Mauricio Pochettino is awaiting information regarding the severity of the midfield player’s injury. Rather than taking a seat among the replacements after being replaced by Armando Broja, the Argentina international made his way straight down the tunnel.
Later, during halftime, Fernandez was shown talking with Pochettino while gripping his thigh. In his news conference following the game, Chelsea’s manager is probably going to give a new update on the 22-year-old’s health.
The remaining quarterfinal match is scheduled to take place at Anfield on Wednesday night. The Blues will now play one of the following teams in the semifinals: Fulham, Middlesbrough, Liverpool, and West Ham. Chelsea’s victory over the Magpies via penalty shootout maintains the possibility of winning a first trophy under manager Rafael Benítez as focus returns to Premier League play this weekend, including a trip to Molineux on Christmas Eve against Wolves.
