Following last week’s scoreless draw at Anfield, Manchester United traveled to London to face David Moyes’ West Ham.
The Dutchman chose a rather solid starting XI considering the resources at his disposal, hoping to build on the confidence earned vs. Jurgen Klopp’s players and after a full week of recuperation.
The starting lineup for the defense of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Willy Kambwala, Jonny Evans, and Luke Shaw, with Andre Onana in goal.
Among the midfield options, Ten Hag chose Bruno Fernandes, Scott McTominay, and Kobbie Mainoo.
In the lead, Rasmus Hojlund was followed by Antony and Alejandro Garnacho. The 2-0 loss to West Ham by Manchester United taught us three things.
The final result is something that Garnacho has to work extremely on.
Garnacho clearly still has a ways to go before he can consistently provide quality goals in goal, as was shown in their match against the Hammers.
The Argentine appears to have supplanted Marcus Rashford in Ten Hag’s thoughts throughout the past few matches.
But Garnacho failed to demonstrate at the London Stadium why Rashford was chosen over him.
Edson Alvarez and Coufal did a fantastic job of containing Garnacho, who is normally good at going one-on-one with defenders.
The United winger had little success making an impression during the match.
The fact that he squandered so many obvious scoring chances is much more worrisome.
With Areola helpless, Garnacho had a golden opportunity to score in the 35th minute. The 19-year-old had a golden opportunity, but he wasted it when the ball got stuck in his own feet. His feeble attempt at a shot failed to disturb Areola in the slightest.
Shortly after, Garnacho was on his way to the West Ham goal. The graduate of the Carrington Academy might have broken the deadlock with a shot, but instead he tried to square the ball to Scott McTominay. His cross was brilliantly intercepted, ending any chance of a goal.
Even though Garnacho often finds himself in prime scoring opportunities, he has often failed to convert them. Because of his incompetence, the Red Devils lost badly to the Hammers.
Like the majority of his colleagues, the forward failed to provide much in the second half. Keep in mind that Garnacho is a rookie in the industry and is still learning the ropes.
Going ahead, he needs to concentrate on and develop his clinical skills immediately.
Kambwala makes a strong debut
Willy Kambwala was a pleasant surprise when the official roster was released.
The veteran Evans was paired with the rookie defense for the defender’s senior debut.
According to Ten Hag’s pregame press conference, Varane was unable to participate against the Irons due to illness. Kambwala performed admirably, even though United lost miserably.
Until West Ham scored through Bowen after Shaw was caught dozing, the 19-year-old played solidly and appeared to be a candidate for man-of-the-match.
The passing of Kambwala was elegant and precise. Time and again, he hit his mark.
The center back was second in the first half for both sides in passes completed, which gives you an idea of how involved he was in the game.
It was hard to tell that Kambwala was making his senior debut in front of United fans because he usually came out on top when duels were necessary.
In a season beset by injuries for the 20-time English champions, Kambwala is sure to receive increased playing time for the first team in the upcoming matches, and it appears like the United academy has another hidden gem on its hands.
Once again, Ten Hag and his squad are under scrutiny.
After gaining some respect in the scoreless draw with Liverpool, Ten Hag had all that ruined in the loss to David Moyes’ West Ham.
Despite United’s typically high standards, the 53-year-old coach has presided over eight defeats in 18 Premier League games this season.
The fact that United’s players just can’t seem to find the back of the net is terrifying.
Despite spending most of the game in possession, the Reds were unable to convert their “dominance” at the London Stadium into goals.
Ten Hag is unquestionably feeling the heat, and he is clearly not as impervious to criticism and criticism as he once was.
After spent so much in previous transfer windows, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is about to complete his 25% partial investment into United, which will surely lead to doubts about Ten Hag’s performance.
On Tuesday, United will face the daunting task of visiting Aston Villa, the high-flying team coached by Unai Emery.
