Karen Carney SLAMS Chelsea’s misfiring forwards as they slump to another defeat at Wolves: ‘You spend a billion pounds… and all you want for Christmas is a centre forward!’
Karen Carney criticized Chelsea’s struggling attackers, suggesting that Mauricio Pochettino’s sole Christmas wish would be a center forward following yet another ineffective attacking performance in their defeat against Wolves.
Chelsea’s woes on away grounds persisted as they suffered a 2-1 loss at Molineux. However, if Pochettino’s team had capitalized on their opportunities, particularly when Raheem Sterling chose not to pass to his open teammates for an easy goal, this match should have been a straightforward victory.
Carney, focusing on Sterling’s missed opportunity to shoot against Jose Sa, expressed her disappointment with the entire attacking unit despite the club’s staggering expenditure of nearly £1 billion on transfers.
“Sterling had the option to either take the ball around Sa or pass it to his teammates,” Carney remarked during her commentary on Sky Sports. “Regardless, he had to score. Frankly, when you invest a billion pounds in transfers, all you would want for Christmas is a center forward.”

Both Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja were included in the starting lineup, but they appeared to lack confidence throughout the game.
Chelsea displayed a strong attacking approach by fielding Armando Broja, Raheem Sterling, Nicolas Jackson, and Cole Palmer from the beginning. However, their performance left much to be desired.
Mykhailo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku were brought on as substitutes, with the latter managing to score his first Premier League goal to reduce the deficit. Nonetheless, Chelsea’s forwards continued to puzzle observers with their lackluster display.
“The connections between the players are there, but they might be too fluid,” Carney remarked. “They need to perform better inside the 18-yard box. Their performance has not been up to par.”
Pochettino, despite the defeat, refrained from being overly critical of his players, acknowledging the crucial goals scored by Wolves’ Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty.
“We feel deeply disappointed because we believe we deserved much more,” expressed the Chelsea boss in an interview with Sky Sports. “Lack of clinical finishing wounds you in this competition. Despite creating chances, we conceded goals from a few corners, which made things very challenging.”
The misery compounds for Pochettino and his coaching staff as it was revealed that Chelsea have missed 36 out of their 57 ‘Big Chances’ in the current Premier League season, the highest among all teams.
“We have been discussing this issue extensively since the beginning of the season. Our team is young in terms of age. We have players who are experiencing their first season in the league, and they need time to adapt. Confidence and quality are crucial factors,” Pochettino explained when questioned about the concerning statistic.
“If we want to win games, we must convert our scoring opportunities. Needless to say, we are extremely disappointed.”
Mauricio Pochettino called for patience with his ‘young’ side still needing time to develop
In certain situations, it becomes crucial to maintain a clean sheet if we struggle to score. Our vulnerability from corners was evident in this match.
“Nevertheless, we must continue to persevere and push forward. Such games serve as valuable learning experiences for young teams.”
Chelsea doesn’t have much time to dwell on their disappointment as they face London rivals Crystal Palace on December 27th.
However, they will be without the services of Cole Palmer, who has been the most influential forward for Chelsea this season in terms of goal involvements, as well as Raheem Sterling. Both players received bookings during the defeat against Wolves.
