In a 2-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano, Getafe saw three players sent off, including Mason Greenwood, who received his first red card as a professional.
Within the first 38 minutes of the feverish match, two players from each side were sent off for their respective teams.
Getafe forward Juanmi Latasa was cautioned by referee Jorge Figueroa Vasquez for a second yellow card on the 40th minute, which was 17 minutes subsequent to his initial booking.
Before halftime, Sergio Camello put Vallecano ahead with his first goal of the match. He then scored again just two minutes after the restart to give Vallecano a 2-0 lead.
Then, at the half-hour mark, Greenwood, who is on loan from Manchester United, was sent off for what appeared to be dissent (the exact form of which is unclear).
A brief video of the incident is embedded below.
The third yellow card of the encounter went to Getafe under strange circumstances as replacement defender Damian Suarez was issued his marching orders.
Omar Alderete, a teammate of the Uruguayan defender, was making his way onto the field to take his place.
However, the referee deemed his speed to be excessive and chose to show him a yellow card.
After he had already left the field, Vasquez issued him a second yellow card.
Consequently, the defender was shamefully sent out for time-wasting even though his team was down 2-0.
As expected, Getafe were unable to stage a comeback, and the result ensures that they remain in eighth position in La Liga. Substitute Alderete was permitted to continue on the field, although he did receive a yellow card of his own in the 82nd minute.
Since their last loss, a 2-0 setback to Las Palmas on December 1, Jose Bordalas’ squad has dropped five points and is now in sixth place, one spot below Real Sociedad, who hold the last European spot.
