In Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham, Erik ten Hag maintains that Alejandro Garnacho deserved a penalty

After his team’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham, Erik ten Hag felt his team should have won a penalty.

After United seized the lead at Old Trafford through Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford, Spurs rallied to earn a draw with to goals from Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur. United returned to north London with a point.

The only United forward who failed to find the back of the net was Alejandro Garnacho, and the winger had a frustrating day against Destiny Udogie, who did a good job of limiting his opportunities.

Nevertheless, Garnacho was of the belief that he ought to have been awarded a penalty during the first half, as he went down in the box while being closely pursued by Udogie. However, his appeals were quickly dismissed.

“Yes,” Ten Hag responded when asked after the game if the referee should have indicated the penalty spot. What are your options? “But I am accustomed to it; that is the case all season,” Ten Hag remarked.

I can think of a lot of examples, but the one at Spurs involved an obvious handball by Romero. I believe it will turn at some point.

United are now in seventh place in the league following Sunday’s draw with Tottenham; they are eight points behind fourth-place Arsenal, who have played one more game.

Ten Hag was displeased with United’s defense over Tottenham, but only three teams have scored less Premier League goals than United this season.

After a goal from Richarlison leveled the score from a corner kιck, United were uncovered just one minute after the break when Rodrigo Bentancur scored.

“We have to be more man in certain situations, you have to go up, more physical, head the ball away,” said Ten Hag.

It just isn’t right. A standard second [goal] followed. They broke our entire team with just one diagonal pass, even though we’re familiar with their rapid releases. Obviously, that won’t work.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag praised Hojlund and Rashford for scoring “two great goals” and thinks his attacking players are finally finding their groove.

Ten Hag pointed out that it was expanding.

“Add that with the game of Alejandro Garnacho, I think then we have a front three that’s a threаt for every opponent.”
