Joe Hugill, a teenager on loan from Manchester United, made an immediate impression in his League One debut for Burton Albion.

This is Hugill’s first loan spell, thus he is seeing English football at its lowest level while playing for a club that is having difficulty competing in the Football League.

On Monday night, Hugill was benched when Burton traveled to Derby County to face them. His new club was down2-1 when the striker came on in the 62nd minute.

Hugill broke the offside trap and bore in on goal in the 65th minute, three minutes after coming on, to tie the game for Burton. This was the start the striker had always hoped for, and he kept his cool in front of goal.

After Hugill’s sensational debut, Derby went on to win the game with a goal in the dying seconds, leaving Burton with little to show for their efforts.

On a more personal level, it was a fantasy debut.

If Burton has a productive loan spell in 2024–25, it might open doors for Hugill at United. Although United will likely add to its striker pool during the summer transfer window, the club is currently lacking on the position.
