The youngster is continuing his impressive form from his time at Borussia Dortmund.
On Saturday, Sancho made his Dortmund debut since 2021 and scored a penalty kιck in a 4-0 Bundesliga victory over Cologne. After a lengthy absence (since August), he returned last week on loan from Manchester United and promptly set up a goal in the match against Darmstadt the following day.
On a day that saw a tҺrilling late-game victory for leader Bayer Leverkusen over Leipzig and a protest by fans who sported golden foil-wrapped chocolate coins and displayed impressive footwork to get a penalty, Sancho’s performance was a standout.
In the 12th minute, Dortmund took the lead thanks to a goal scored by Donyell Malen. The Dutch forward took advantage of a space created by a Dortmund corner routine, which evaded Cologne’s defense, and scored a low shot.
During the 56th minute, Sancho earned a penalty after he dribbled past the Cologne defense and caused Rasmus Carstensen, the right back, to grab at his shirt. Niclas Füllkrug took the penalty shot and scored. The position Sancho played in Dortmund’s forward line brought back a flood of memories from his final season in Germany, 2020–21, when he netted 16 goals and assisted on 20 more across all competitions before joining United.
Not long after that, on a crucial play by another Premier League loanee to Dortmund, Malen scored the third. Ian Maatsen, a fullback who had just joined the team from Chelsea, regained possession in his own half and set up Malen, who ran through Cologne’s defense, for the goal.
In the 66th minute, Sancho was substituted with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, another English player. In the 94th minute, Youssoufa Moukoko scored Dortmund’s fourth goal, assisted by Bynoe-Gittens.
If Dortmund wins, they will remain in fifth place. Out of 18 teams in the league, Cologne sits in 17th place and has gone winless in their last five games.
