Robert Downey Jr.’s Astonishing Transformation: The Sympathizer Teaser Trailer Reveals His Unrecognizable Portrayal of Four Characters in Comedy-Drama Series

In his new show, Robert Downey Jr. has a greatly altered appearance.

A new teaser trailer for the upcoming comedy-drаmа The Sympathizer was published on Thursday, featuring the actor in four different roles.

In the latest clip, which depicts a double agent working in the US close to the conclusion of the Vietnam ᴡаʀ, the 58-year-old alternated between roles.

Alongside Hoa Xuande and Sandra Oh, the Academy Award-nominated actor—who was almost overlooked for the Tony Stark role in Iron Man—will also feature.

The Captain, Xuande, is shown in the trailer asking Ms. Sofia Mori, Oh, “What are you concealing?” when they first meet at a social gathering.

Following Mori’s statement that divulging secrets is “the most exciting thing in the world,” The Captain has a flashback in which a CIA agent played by Downey Jr. says, “This is America.” That is intended in the riskiest possible way.

It turns out that The Captain is a double agent working for the North Vietnamese government, despite the agent recruiting him to be a CIA agent and telling him to “just be your charming self.”

Later, after Xuande’s character has slept with Mori, the latter remarks that he allows ‘people continue on thinking you’re perfectly in accord with everything all without saying a word yourself.’

Subsequently, the Captain discloses his communist affiliation and claims to have effectively “infiltrated the enemy.” A North Vietnamese official then counsels the Captain to exercise prudence in his future missions.

‘Only a spy says there’s no spy,’ the CIA agent jokes, despite The Captain’s best efforts to persuade his fellow operations that they had not been infiltrated by a mole.

“This is your assignment – see it through,” a CIA agent growls after torturing Xuande’s character with electroshock.

Later, Downey Jr. was spotted playing a higher-ranking official in the US administration, and he was heard angrily telling an unidentified character, “Now I see which side of you will win out.”

The Captain tells a North Vietnamese official that he is a spy, and the official responds, “You are a man of two faces,” to finish the trailer. Thus, choose one.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same nаme by Viet Thanh Nguyen, which was first released in 2015, served as the inspiration for The Sympathizer.

The public first learned about the project’s development in 2021 when it was disclosed that Park Chan-wook, who is most known for his roles in movies like Oldboy and The Handmaiden, was initially involved with the project.

In July of that year, it was revealed that Downey Jr., who shaved his head during the show’s filming, had signed on as one of its stars.

The actor plays several characters in the show and is also one of its executive producers, together with his wife Susan.

On April 14, The Sympathizer will be available for viewing on HBO Max.
