And throughout the hectic ninety minutes against Real Salt Lake, the supporters at the freshly christened Chase Stadium were again reminded of the reason they had traveled. It didn’t matter if it was by train, vehicle, or plane.

Messi demonstrated once more why the journey was worthwhile. The Herons defeated their opponents 2-0 on Wednesday night to open their season on a positive note. They largely played the part of the MLS Cup contenders that they are expected to be.

It was reasonable to question whether Miami would arrive at the start of the season looking unimpressive following their extravagant preparations, which involved thousands of miles flown to Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and Japan.

Nevertheless, there was a sense of hope.

When Luis Suarez and his family were introduced to the crowd, he gave co-owner David Beckham a hearty embrace.

In the supporters’ section, the pink wave bobbed. As the teams left, a few supporters beneath the press box waved an Argentina flag.

Any initial reservations were swiftly dispelled, though, as the hosts appeared match-fit rather than fatigued after the previous month’s friendlies.

However, the crowd did not moan, and after additional successful saves by Diego Gomez and Suarez, the supporters were rewarded for their endurance.

A low Robert Taylor attempt went through MacMath’s hands in the 39th minute. The sequence, which was set up by a through pass from Sergio Busquets, progressed by Messi, and was completed by football journeyman Taylor, demonstrated why Miami paid a high price for its four stars: when you’re supported by elite players, it’s difficult to ignore home.

That kind of pedigree has piqued interest on a local and international level.

Even while Miami has 16 million Instagram followers—far more than any other MLS team—the club’s 21,500-capacity stadium has a somewhat small-town atmosphere.

For example, your Lyft driver telling you he has David Beckham’s phone number is not something you hear every day.

However, there are still issues for Miami’s dazzling array of skill to work out.

Although Salt Lake didn’t quite defeat their hosts, they did show them how to achieve it.

Early in the second half, Salt Lake forced errors from their opponents on multiple occasions, forcing Busquets’ ailing legs to retrace the play back towards his goal.

The visitors blew those opportunities, but Miami, especially new player Julian Gressel, was equally careless.

After MacNath veered off his line and left the goal early, he undercooked his shot and missed a close-range volley from a cross.

Miami will be hoping that this is not an issue, but if Messi or Suarez miss time, where will the goals come from? Even if it’s all theoretical right now, it makes sense to raise the question.

At the other end of the field, RSL weren’t quite finished either.

In the 65th minute, Andrew Brody missed with a half volley from close range, Brayan Vera forced the game’s finest save on a set piece header, and Cristian Arango later went down at the worst possible moment while he was battling with DeAndre Yedlin on a fast break.

Miаmi wаs pushed аnd оccаsiоnаlly аppeаred а little less dоminаnt thаn the MLS Cup cоntender they аre striving tо be, but they did nоt quite crаck.

Nevertheless, their skill would eventually prevail, and in the 83rd minute, Diego Gomez’s goal—which was assisted by Suarez—virtually sealed the victory.

In addition, the Uruguayan will regret missing a clear opportunity to shoot at MacMath’s foot three minutes later, which would have given him his debut goal.

Still, the hosts had a nice if uneventful evening.

One pair announced prior to kickoff that they would be traveling from Los Angeles for each home game as season ticket holders.

On Wednesday, they’ll have witnessed more than enough to make them turn around.
