Three possible landing spots for Joey Votto
Joey Votto is a Reds legend who deserves a job.
The Reds just don’t have enough space for their iconic franchise player. Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand have demonstrated their potential as a result of their young movement.
Moving Steer from the hot corner, Jeimer Candelario inked a three-year contract to take over at third base. Votto is now on the outside looking in as a result of that signing and the young Reds players.
Three teams were interested in Votto, according to a January article by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Votto is still available, though, waiting for a team that needs a first baseman and an experienced presence.
Votto wants to play again, but he’s kept himself occupied with things like his search for mascots during the NHL All-Star Game. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be comparing himself to Sandra Bullock and pleading with George Clooney for assistance.
What could become of Joey Votto? Let’s examine three potential landing locations.
1. Cleveland Guardians
In terms of OPS+ in 2023, Josh Naylor, the Guardians’ starting first baseman, was the top hitter for the team. But he is at the top of the first and DH depth charts.
Despite being one of the best first-base prospects in the game, Kyle Manzardo is invited to spring training but is not on the roster. But the Guardians might keep him underage in order to manipulate his community service hours. David Fry, a utility player, would remain the other first baseman on the team in such a trade.
Despite his advanced age, Votto would still offer a youthful team that needs both seasoned leadership and a potent bat. For a team that is still expecting to compete in a lower tier, he might be the ideal match.
2. San Diego Padres
Another team going through a metamorphosis with an eye toward making the playoffs are the Padres. Although Jake Cronenworth is now ranked #1 on their depth chart, a utility role is where he fits in best.
Because Manny Machado might not be ready to play at third on Opening Day, the infield is also a little uneasy. At third and DH, Machado is also at the top of the depth chart.
Votto could step into San Diego’s DH role after filling a hole until Machado is ready for the hot corner. Despite the Padres’ recent payroll reductions, Votto might be the best choice.
3. Los Angeles Angels
The Angels will be without first base for the foreseeable future. In less than two months, Nolan Schanuel moved from being the 11th overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft to the starting first baseman.
On the other hand, the DH position is far less certain. As the Angels’ designated hitter and second baseman, Brandon Drury is atop the depth chart. Although he will be needed in the infield, Luis Rengifo will play a role at second. The Angels intend to keep both Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon healthy through 2024, so they will both be considered in the DH mix.
Votto, though, might be that component if the Angels want a solid option at DH. Additionally, as Schanuel grows more acclimated to the majors, he would be able to mentor him and help teach him the necessary skills for handling the role.
Though not quite as excellent as it would be in Cleveland or San Diego, the Angels represent a feasible destination.
