According to co-writer Muni Long (Priscilla Renea Hamilton), Rihanna’s song ‘California King Bed’ was written in a mere 10 minutes.
Long, along with Andrew Harr, Jermaine Jackson, Alex Delicata, and Rihanna herself, collaborated on the tune for Rihanna’s fifth studio album ‘Loud’ released in 2010.
Long shared the story of how the song came about during a break from her online furniture shopping spree. She recalled how she was planning to move to L.A. at the time and, while browsing furniture online, Harr and Jackson played her the chords for the song. Long quickly came up with the lyrics, inspired by the phrase “California King Bed” that she had spontaneously uttered.
Despite originally being intended for Kelly Clarkson, the song ended up in Rihanna’s hands, marking the beginning of Long’s collaboration with the Barbadian superstar. Long expressed her excitement about working with Rihanna and continued to collaborate with her in the studio thereafter. As fans eagerly anticipate Rihanna’s ninth studio album, following the release of ‘Anti’ in 2016, the singer continues to keep them waiting for new music.
