Serena Williams demonstrated grace and compassion in the aftermath of her challenging loss to Naomi Osaka.
During the U.S. Open Women’s Final, Osaka, aged 20, emerged victorious over the tennis icon, aged 36, following Williams’ receipt of three code violations. In the emotional trophy ceremony that followed, amidst a wave of boos from the crowd, Osaka lowered her cap and tears began to flow. Sensing Osaka’s distress, Williams stepped closer to her, extending her arm in a comforting embrace following a difficult defeat.
As Osaka wiped away her tears, Williams offered words of encouragement, prompting Osaka to crack a smile and eliciting cheers from fans at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Later, Williams came to Osaka’s defense, stating, “I don’t want to be disrespectful, but I also don’t want to interrupt. I prefer not to take any questions. I just want to express that she played exceptionally well, especially considering this was her first Grand Slam.”
Williams went on to say, “I understand you were all here rooting, and I was rooting too. But let’s turn this moment into something positive, and we’ll get through it together. Let’s acknowledge everyone’s efforts and refrain from booing. We can overcome this, so let’s maintain a positive atmosphere. Congratulations, Naomi! Let’s move forward without any more booing.”
In response, Osaka addressed the crowd, saying, “I know many of you were cheering for Serena, and I apologize for the way it ended. I want to express my gratitude for everyone who watched the match.” She continued, “It has always been my dream to compete against Serena in the U.S. Open finals. So I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to fulfill that dream, and I’m appreciative of the chance to play against you.”
During the match, Williams received a violation from chair umpire Carlos Ramos for alleged illegal coaching from her player box in the first set. She asserted to Ramos, “I don’t resort to cheating to secure a win. I would rather lose.”
Upon being penalized with a game penalty for court violation, Williams confronted Ramos, stating, “You will never officiate another match of mine for the rest of your life. You are being dishonest. When will you apologize to me? You owe me an apology. Admit it. Say you’re sorry. … Additionally, you unjustly deducted a point from me. You’re also acting dishonestly!”
