SYDNEY, IT’S YOUR turn to serve a premiere. Challengers, the much-anticipated, sexy tennis drama by Call Me Be Your Name director Luca Guadagnino will be heading harbourside on Tuesday, March 26. Yes folks: That means queen of the screen, icon of the red carpet, Zendaya herself will be in Sydney.

In the film, Zendaya stars as Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach — who finds herself embroiled in a high-stakes love triangle with players and friends, Art (Mike Faist) and Patrick (Josh O’Connor). After a devastating injury puts an end to her Grand Slam career, an infatuated Art asks Tashi to coach him into being a world-famous champion. Years later and now married, Art hits a losing streak which forces him to sign up for a “challenger” event — aka. “close to the lowest level of pro tournament” — in a bid to regain his ranking. Much to the pair’s surprise, Art’s opponent happens to be former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend, Patrick — and let’s just say things get a little heated, on and off the court.

Joining Zendaya at the Sydney premiere will be co-stars Faist and O’Connor, as well as the film’s producer, Rachel O’Connor.

Film buffs will best recognise Faist from playing Riff in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021), while O’Connor needs little introduction for fans of The Crown — the British actor having starred as young King Charles III for two seasons of the hit Netflix series from 2019 to 2020.

The Challengers Sydney premiere will take place at Sydney’s iconic State Theatre at Market Street — where The Little Mermaid and Babylon also premiered last year.

Red carpet arrivals are set to commence from 6pm, and following the sartorial success of the Dune Part Two press tour, we can’t wait to see what Zendaya — and her long-term stylist, Law Roach — pull out for the occasion.
