Serena Williams discusses her approach to instilling body positivity in her daughters

The athlete and her husband Alexis Ohanian are proud parents to daughters Olympia, aged 6, and Adira, who was born last summer. Serena Williams employs a straightforward yet impactful method to promote body positivity: encouraging her daughters to share compliments with others.

During an interview with ET’s Rachel Smith in New York City at the launch event of her makeup line, Wyn Beauty, the 42-year-old tennis legend discussed her approach to nurturing body positivity in her two young girls. Williams emphasized the importance of self-love and acceptance regardless of appearance. She encourages her daughters to offer compliments, especially to other girls, as a way to foster positivity. Williams believes that finding something positive about others helps one find positivity within oneself, ultimately leading to personal success.

For Williams, embracing body positivity means staying true to oneself. She openly shares her experiences, including a recent video where she struggled to fit into a denim Valentino skirt, demonstrating her commitment to authenticity and self-acceptance.

The greatest tennis player of all time expressed determination toward her goal, stating, ‘I’m going to fit into that skirt soon,’ regarding a moment many can relate to. She emphasized the importance of honesty, noting, ‘No, it’s important just to be honest. And I, literally, don’t consider myself any different from anyone else. I’m going through the same struggles, but I will fit in that skirt!’

Williams, along with her partner Alexis Ohanian, serves as a positive example for their daughters, a sentiment evident in how Olympia follows their lead. Williams shared in an interview with ET last November that Olympia is adjusting to her role as a big sister. ‘She’s navigating it. She loves it,’ Williams expressed. ‘Adira’s like a tiny little baby, so Olympia just calls her her little sis.’

According to Williams, Olympia had prayed for a sister, so she’s delighted with how everything has turned out.

Regarding the launch of Wyn Beauty, it marks a significant milestone for Serena Williams, representing a near full-circle moment. The development of her makeup line has been a long-term project, originating from her own need for versatile makeup that accommodated her busy schedule. Despite facing challenges such as the global pandemic, Williams’ determination, akin to her relentless drive on the tennis courts since her childhood in Compton, California, propelled her vision forward.

“I’ve been working on this endeavor for over six years,” Williams reveals. “Even before COVID, I was in discussions with various individuals about our plans for this venture and how we intended to execute it. This has been in the works for an extensive period of time, not something that just materialized spontaneously.”

With the support of a dedicated team, Williams successfully brought her vision to life—a dynamic beauty line featuring products like soft-matte concealer in various shades, mascara, waterproof liquid eyeliner, brow and eye pencils, satin lipsticks, and more. These products are now available on Wyn Beauty’s website as well as through the beauty retailer ULTA.

“For me, I’m super active. I feel like I’m more active now as a mom and just as a business woman and as an entrepreneur than I’ve ever really been in my life,” Williams says. “I love beauty and I love my makeup, but I can’t necessarily go to the grocery store like this or go pick up my daughter at school. It doesn’t really suit my lifestyle.”

“One of our thesis is that we invest into everyday life, the lives of everyday people,” Williams says. “I was thinking about makeup and how it’s everyday makeup for that everyday person, that everyday woman. So it’s kinda how the concept started. As much as I love my glam look, I need to have something that’s everyday. That’s easy. I can literally put it on in 10 minutes and still be as glam as I need to be for that day, and it lasts the whole day.”
