Serena Williams wears shoes encrusted with 400 diamonds when competing

On the opening night of the US Open, the Grand Slam singles champion defeated Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in two sets 6-3, 6-3. Serena wore custom-designed NikeCourt Flare 2 sports shoes, made by her in collaboration with Nike. Diamonds are embedded on the signature Swoosh mark on the side of the shoe and motifs on the heel. The competition outfit, inspired by figure skaters’ skirts, includes six layers to honor Serena Williams ‘ six titles at Flushing Meadows . The body of the shirt is decorated with many crystals inspired by the starry sky – the night the match took place. The outfit comes with a matching jacket and tote bag.

The US Open is Serena Williams’ last tournament before she retires to spend time with her family and business career. The tournament was also the first place where Serena won the Grand Slam in 1999. She currently holds 23 women’s singles Grand Slams, the second most in history and a record in the Open era for both men and women. Since winning the 2017 Australian Open, Serena has lost four Grand Slam finals, missing the opportunity to equal and surpass legendary Margaret Court’s record of 24 titles.

To honor the tennis player, Vogue invited her to be on the cover of its September issue. In an interview with the magazine, she said: “I have never liked the term retirement. I thought this was a transition. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m doing is evolution. I love tennis, but I can’t play forever. I cry at the thought of leaving career. I didn’t win at Wimbledon and I’m not sure I won in New York, but I will try for the fun of the matches.”

According to People , Serena Williams and her husband – businessman Alexis Ohanian – are expecting another child after their first child – four-year-old daughter Olympia. In the near future, she will focus her efforts on running her own venture capital fund.
