Cincinnati Reds’ Depth May Take Hit After Veteran Opts Out of Contract

Mike Ford’s performance at Triple-A Louisville has been impressive.

The Cincinnati Reds have reportedly given Mike Ford the option to terminate his contract, as reported by Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

Ford possessed the prerogative to exercise his contract cancellation in the minor leagues rather than the major leagues. A few days remain before the Reds make a determination on whether to promote him to the major league roster or to grant him his release.

This development is noteworthy given the Reds’ recent underabundance of personnel. Tyler Stephenson and Christian Encarnación-Strand have both been sidelined with hand injuries. Both players were struck by projectiles during the series against the Texas Rangers.

Ford, despite being a left-handed hitter, has respectable strikeout percentages against right-handed pitching and, should the Reds decide to promote him to the major leagues, could be an intriguing addition to the bench.

They would be required to execute a commensurate action, such as adding Stephenson or Encarnación-Strand to the list of injured.
