Serena Williams is stepping back into the sports spotlight as the host of The ESPYS in July.
The retired tennis icon, who boasts 23 major tournament wins, will become the fourth woman to lead the show honoring athletes, achievements, and moments from the past year. The ESPYS ceremony is set to be broadcast from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on July 11.
In the 2020 edition of the show, which was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Megan Rapinoe, Sue Bird, and Russell Wilson served as co-hosts. Danica Patrick made history as the first solo female host in 2018, shortly after her retirement from auto racing.
Expressing her excitement, Williams stated in a Tuesday statement, “This is a dream come true for me, and something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. It has been a sensational year for sports and an unprecedented one for female athletes. I can’t wait to celebrate everyone onstage in July.”
During her tennis career, Williams collected an impressive 12 ESPYS awards.
The ESPYS event will be complemented by the July 10 premiere of “In the Arena: Serena Williams,” an eight-part series on ESPN+ chronicling her remarkable career.
Since retiring after the 2022 U.S. Open, Williams has focused on various endeavors, including the launch of a makeup line in April and the establishment of a venture capital firm that supports women and founders of color in early-stage businesses. She also welcomed her second daughter in August.
