A new rumor suggests that the Texas Rangers attempted to add a third former Cy Young winner to their rotation before Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline.
As of today, the Texas Rangers hold a disappointing 52-57 record. However, as the defending World Series champions, they are only five games behind in the American League West. There is genuine belief that they could make a serious push to win the division in the second half of the season.
A key factor fueling this second-half optimism is the return of some major pitchers to the starting rotation. Max Scherzer, the first piece of this puzzle, made his long-awaited comeback in late June. Additionally, Jacob deGrom, the costly 2023 free agent acquisition, is set to return to the rotation soon following Tommy John surgery.
Having two multi-time Cy Young winners in the rotation for the final stretch of the season is a significant boost. However, it appears that the organization also tried to secure a third multi-time Cy Young winner for the rotation this week.
During a live stream on Bleacher Report on Wednesday, MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed that the Texas Rangers were one of six teams that pursued San Francisco Giants ace Blake Snell when he was put on the trade block late last week.
Other teams in the mix included the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres, all vying for the reigning National League Cy Young winner. Despite the interest, the Giants decided not to trade Snell and kept him on their roster.
