Manchester United need Marcus Rashford to remain if he wants to get back to his best

After scoring more goals than in any season in his career last summer, most would have thought it was a crazy move to sell Marcus Rashford.

As he ripped through most English defenses with ease, the winger was widely praised. Former Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez was so impressed by him that he named him one of the hardest players his team had played when he was manager.

The England international’s deadly blend of speed, technique, and finishing ability has earned him the label of “unplayable” when he’s performing at his peak.

However, things have changed somewhat in the past twelve months.

Throughout the season, the 26-year-old’s attitude and body language on the pitch were constantly criticized by analysts.

The winger’s form was all over the place and he was overshadowed by younger attackers Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, leading to a precipitous decline in his goal total from 30 in the previous season to only eight this time around. However, he did have magical moments, such as his wonder shot in the Manchester derby.

Plus, with Kobbie Mainoo’s incredible rise to prominence, Rashford is no longer seen as the face of United and its academy.

Rashford already has a tough time breaking back into the national team after being left out of England’s Euro 2024 roster. The Three Lions have a lot of attacking skill, so he will have a tough time getting back into the starting lineup.

So, earlier this summer, rumors started circulating that United would be open to selling the player for a bid of approximately Β£80 million. Arsenal, PSG, and clubs from Saudi Arabia were all reportedly interested, but no serious offers have come in.

A hasty sale of the player would be a mistake, though.

His performance in preseason has reportedly impressed the United camp, and he was a key player in each of the three matches played during the United tour of the United States.

Both of his matches against Arsenal and Real Betis featured assists from him, and in the latter, he scored a penalty kick that missed the mark.

Rashford had moments of electrifying play in the 0-3 loss to Liverpool. He was a continual threat to Liverpool’s defense and worked well with fellow academy players Toby Collyer and Harry Amass.

In addition to Rasmus Hojlund, who was acquired last summer, United have bolstered their offensive capabilities by acquiring Joshua Zirkzee and the soon-to-be-arrived Chido Obi-Martin.

United still can’t afford to lose a player of Rashford’s caliber, even though the likes of Amad Diallo and Jadon Sancho’s comeback have bolstered the wing depth.

Diallo and Sancho aren’t exactly known for their goal-scoring prowess, Zirkzee will require some acclimatization time to the league and club, and Obi-Martin, being mainly an academy signing, will probably just get odd cup minutes.

His 131 goals in 402 games make him the most seasoned and productive offensive option for the team.

A change in strategy and collaborating with Ruud van Nistelrooy and the like would undoubtedly improve the striker’s game and goal-scoring abilities, as can be rationally claimed.

Although the majority of supporters will likely concede that they will not frequently witness the exceptional performances of 2022–23, Rashford has significantly improved upon his performance from the previous season.

He must be if United are to accomplish their home and international goals this year.
