After a breakthrough in negotiations, Conor Gallagher, a midfielder for Chelsea, is likely to sign a five-year agreement with Atletico Madrid for £33.7 million. Gallagher will fly to Madrid today to finalize the deal
After a breakthrough in negotiations, Chelsea forward Conor Gallagher will go to Madrid on Monday to sign a five-year deal with Atletico.
Last week, Atletico and Chelsea reached an agreement on a £33.7 million deal, and Atletico is now demanding a response by today.
After 16 years at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea made it obvious to Gallagher that he should go on. On Sunday, talks quickened with the club, and a settlement was reached in the early hours of the morning.Everything is likely to be finalized for the England international later today, as Gallagher will be traveling to Madrid with his agent Paul Nicholls to finalize terms.
Tottenham remained informed as well, but they chose not to move forward with a competing offer. After accepting a £57.5 million offer from Aston Villa in June and last week’s bid from Atletico Madrid, Chelsea twice offered Gallagher a two-year deal with an additional year’s option.
The 24-year-old was willing to remain at the club, where he served as captain under Mauricio Pochettino last season, but he desired a longer-term contract like his colleagues.
On Friday, though, things really heated up when he learned upon his return from vacation that he would not be joining the Chelsea first squad and would likely play a supporting role under Enzo Maresca.
Speculation linking the academy graduate with a permanent exit from his boyhood club is growing, and there are concerns that he may not fit Maresca’s system.
Matt O’Riley of Celtic is supposedly being considered by Chelsea as a possible midfield replacement. O’Riley was instrumental in Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic’s 2017 Scottish Premiership winning campaign, scoring 18 goals in 37 games.
O’Riley, a London native, played for England at various junior levels before making his senior debut for Denmark last year after switching allegiances.
