Andrew Chafin has proven to be a charming interviewee.
He made a memorable impact with the Detroit Tigers, not only with his sometimes unhittable slider but also with his distinctive interview style. His engaging conversation with Dan Petry went viral during Spring Training.
Known as “Big Country,” the nine-year veteran resides on a farm near Massillon, Ohio. During his chat with Petry, he confidently stated that he could build anything with the right tools.
Those tools have now found their way to Arlington, Texas, at least for now. The seasoned left-handed reliever was traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor leaguers Chase Lee and Joseph Montalvo during the MLB Trade Deadline. Chafin has settled into life in the Lone Star State, connecting with some fellow “rednecks.”
After a week with the American League West team, he shared his initial impressions of Texas. “I love it so far. There are actually a few other rednecks on this team, so we sit and chat about fun stuff I enjoy discussing,” he said. “It’s great.”
Chafin declined to reveal the identities of the other “rednecks” in the clubhouse or the specifics of their conversations. He did mention that they chat about trucks, heavy equipment, and similar topics.
“That’s all you’re getting,” Chafin said with a smile.
As Chafin continues to adjust to life with the Rangers, more information about his “redneck” group might come to light. In the meantime, fans can appreciate the veteran left-hander’s intriguing personality while he focuses on helping the Rangers secure a playoff spot in the second half of the season.
