Manchester United were defeated on penalties by their cross-town rivals Manchester City in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Substitute Alejandro Garnacho broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute with a spectacular goal, but City equalized seven minutes later through Bernardo Silva.

It came down to a penalty shootout, and the reigning Premier League champions won.

United had 44% possession against City’s 56%. Erik ten Hag’s men took eight shots, two of which were on target.

City, on the other hand, had several good chances at goal, but only one of them forced Andre Onana to step up.

United completed 400 passes with an accuracy of 85%. In comparison, City strung 504 passes with an 87% completion rate.

One of United’s standout players was Casemiro, who started in his preferred defensive midfield position.

The Brazilian had an individual pass accuracy of 84%, completing 38 of the 45 passes he attempted. He made two important passes.

Casemiro attempted to find a United teammate with four long balls. He connected twice. The former Real Madrid player created a great chance.

He attempted three dribbles but did not complete any. United’s No.18 competed in 16 ground duels, winning nine of them.

Casemiro also won the single aerial challenge that he entered. The 32-year-old drew two coulds and cleared as many as he could.

Casemiro had a disappointing 2023/24 season, with strong evidence of his rapid decline. However, based on his performance against City, the five-time Champions League winner seemed to have enough left in the tank.
