Raphael Varane had a rough start to his career with Como on Sunday, as he was substituted out less than half an hour into the match. After leaving Manchester United in June when his contract expired, the 31-year-old signed with the Italian club last month after they were promoted to Serie A.
He made his debut for Como on their journey to Sampdoria in the first round of the Coppa Italia after signing a two-year contract. He was in the starting lineup with players like Pepe Reina and Alberto Moreno, who were both from Liverpool, as well as Patrick Cutrone, who had played for Wolves, and Andrea Belotti, who was a prolific scorer.
Having said that, Varane’s debut was disastrous from the beginning. The Frenchman, who had a troublesome injury history with United, limped out in the 23rd minute due to what appeared to be a knee problem. After he left the field with two Como physios, Edoardo Goldaniga came on as his replacement.Varane, who was trying to impress his new teammates, takes a heavy hit. Como fell behind after losing Varane, as Sampdoria’s Nicholas Ioannou scored the first goal. But right before halftime, Como scored a goal by putting the ball in Cutrone’s net.
Penalties were necessary since neither team could find a way to win. Gennaro Tutino delivered the game-winning shot in a thrilling shootout, and Sampdoria advanced to the next round. Como will face Juventus in their first game of the Serie A season next.
Injuries were par for the course for Varane throughout his three seasons with United. Because of his chronic injuries, he was unable to play in the Premier League for more than 24 games in any of his three seasons. While playing for Manchester United, Varane missed an incredible 48 matches.
While playing for United, Varane won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, among other memorable moments. He made 95 appearances. “To you guys, supporters of Manchester United, it has been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt,” Varane said after confirming his exit.
Going at Old Trafford for the first time as a Manchester United player was just mind-blowing. Everything about it was breathtaking. I had strong feelings for the club and its supporters. To really grasp the significance of that, you must be a Manchester United player. This place seems like home to my kids. It will always hold a particular place in my heart.
