On Wednesday in Warsaw, Kylian Mbappe scored in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Atalanta, marking his debut with the club and contributing to their record-breaking sixth UEFA Super Cup.
The legendary French striker finally signed with Real Madrid this summer when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired, and he scored in his debut game to celebrate playing for his favorite club after years of waiting.
The holders of the Champions League were able to break the deadlock in the 59th minute thanks to a close-range goal by Fede Valverde. The Italians, winners of the Europa League, had a solid first half.
In the 68th minute, as Madrid piled on the chances, Mbappe scored the game-winning goal after Jude Bellingham had spotted his run into space in the box.
“It was an incredible night, I’ve been anticipating this moment for quite some time,” Mbappe expressed to Movistar in his native Spanish.
It is an honor for me to play in front of these supporters while wearing this jersey and badge.
“We won a trophy too, that’s very important, we know that here we always have to win and I am very happy.”
With this victory, Carlo Ancelotti tied Miguel Munoz, another Los Blancos coach, for the record for most championships won by a coach in his tenure with the club.
Creating a strategy to maximize his many attacking stars’ potential will be the Italian’s top priority this season.
Mbappe started in the center of Madrid’s attack, with Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes on either side, in the first glimpse at his potential role in Ancelotti’s plans for the season.
Consequently, England international Bellingham was not used in the forward position he started last season—a position in which he scored devastating goals—but rather as one of three midfielders.
“(Mbappe) has the quality to score a lot of goals,” Ancelotti told Movistar before the match.
“What we have to look for is balance in the team — today we didn’t have that balance.”
In the fifteenth minute, during a closely contested first half, Mbappe had the best opportunity to score, but Isak Hien made a good save from his effort from the center of the box.
Atalanta, managed by Gian Piero Gasperini, were making their Super Cup debut after shocking Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final last season. Eder Militao nearly gave his team the lead when he headed a cross from Marten de Roon past his own bar.
While advancing from midfield, Bellingham took a hard touch to control a beautiful pass from Vinicius and was then booked for a late challenge on Juan Musso, the Atalanta goalkeeper.
Just before halftime, Vinicius set Rodrygo up for a shot, but the strike grazed the top of Atalanta’s crossbar.
At the beginning of the second half, Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois—who was out for the whole of last season due to injury—made a miraculous stop with one hand to deflect a Mario Pasalic header.
The Mbappe transferValverde scored Madrid’s first goal just before the hour mark with a tap-in from close range as Atalanta’s defense fretted over Mbappe’s increased freedom of movement.
As his impact grew, Bellingham set up Vinicius, who in turn set up the Uruguayan midfielder for a tap-in goal.
When passed through on goal, Vinicius should have increased Madrid’s lead, but Musso saved it with a diving header.
In Madrid’s pursuit of a second goal, Musso denied Bellingham after Swedish defender Hien had already stopped his shot. Bellingham had previously played for Borussia Dortmund. In the end, Mbappe scored a deadly finish when Bellingham maintained an offensive and noticed the Frenchman’s deft movement.
The Madrid faithful erupted in applause as Ancelotti substituted the striker in the 83rd minute—the first of what would be numerous substitutions involving the player.
With Madrid’s La Liga campaign kicking off on Saturday against Real Mallorca, Mbappe expressed his expectation of a dramatic improvement in the coming weeks.
“I am sure we will get better and me first of all — but today is a positive step,” he said.
