Mason Greenwood, a former Manchester United attacker, scored a spectacular first goal in Marseille’s inaugural match against Brest in Ligue 1.
Earlier this summer, Greenwood became the first player from the Roberto De Zerbi region to join Marseille on a permanent basis. De Zerbi himself left Brighton and Hove Albion to join Marseille.
The 22-year-old, who has signed a five-year deal with United, was valued at approximately £26.6m (€31.6m) by Marseille.
It is believed that the Red Devils included a substantial sell-on clause in the agreement, ranging from 40 to 50 percent.
It took Greenwood all of three minutes to open the scoring for Marseille. He went on a fantastic run down the right wing and slotted the ball low into the bottom corner. After 28 minutes, the Englishman scored again, this time from the penalty spot, to make it three for Marseille.
De Zerbi began Greenwood’s career in a 4-2-3-1 formation on the right wing.
As the 22-year-old attempts to establish himself in his new life in France, his double against Brest will surely boost his confidence.
He has been the center of attention ever since he finished his transfer to Marseille.
Some members of the club’s fanbase and outsiders were opposed to the player’s transfer to The Stade Vélodrome after he spent last season on loan at Getafe.
The signing of Greenwood was strongly opposed by Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille. Payan stated his disapproval, saying that the team should not be “shamed by someone who hits his wife.”
Greenwood disputed the allegations leveled against her in October 2022, which included attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and violence. There was a violation of his bail terms that led to his arrest on the same day. The Crown Prosecution Service dismissed all charges against the Carrington academy graduate in February 2023 after important witnesses withdrew their testimony.
After joining United when he was nine years old, he worked his way up to the senior team and made his debut in March 2019.
