Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has named two Manchester United players—Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martinez—to the national team for their forthcoming matches.
In World Cup qualifiers, Argentina will take on Chile on September 6 and Colombia on September 10.
Unsurprisingly, Garnacho and Martinez were named to Scaloni’s squad earlier on Monday.
Both players were members of Argentina’s winning squad at this summer’s Copa America.
In July, the Albiceleste won the tournament in Miami with a 1-0 victory over Colombia. With five starts in five Copa America matches, Martinez was an integral component of Scaloni’s setup.
No goals were conceded by Argentina while Martinez was on the field, which is a clear indication of his impact.
In the tournament, Garnacho only played in one game—a 66th-minute substitute cameo in the last group stage match against Peru, a game they went on to win 2-0.
Martinez was named United’s starting quarterback for the club’s Premier League debut against Fulham and for both of United’s Community Shield matches.
After spending most of the match against City at left back, the no. 6 was able to return to his more natural position in the following week’s match against the Cottagers.
Erik ten Hag has clearly preferred a wing pairing of Marcus Rashford and Amad Diallo in both United matches, meaning Garnacho has started on the bench.
After coming on as a substitute, Garnacho made an immediate impact at Wembley, breaking the tie against City. U.S. would ultimately lose in a penalty shootout. From the penalty spot, Garnacho scored.
The youthful forward was a ray of sunshine for Manchester United against Fulham in the second half, but he had a forgettable moment after Marcus Rashford set him up with a pass, and he couldn’t find the back of the net.
