Bruno Fernandes opens up about his contract negotiations with Manchester United
Details of the discussions between Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and club executives that led to his signing a new contract have been made public by Fernandes.
Official confirmation of Fernandes’ new deal to stay at Old Trafford until 2027 came last week from United.
An additional year is also an option.
According to an interview the Portugal international gave to ESPN, he received “concrete proposals” to quit United this summer, but he decided to stay because of the club’s desire to compete for the biggest prizes.
More details about Fernandes’s conversations with club executives were revealed when he spoke with club media.
One of the playmaker’s goals is to challenge the top teams, and his club was aware of this. It was obvious to them that we needed a stronger squad. In my opinion, we are already doing that.
‘I don’t need you to assure me that we’re going to win the league.'” I told them that, of course. Because nobody can guarantee it. The fact remains, though, that we will field a squad capable of challenging for and winning hardware at the top levels this season.
“It seems like the club is up to that. To make things more competitive [so] everyone is vying for your spot; to increase the number of high-quality players on the squad.
However, remaining at the club was always my top priority. What I wanted to see was the club’s future, so I could envision a future based on that—not demands, though. In all candor, I can tell that the club is trying to pull that off.
“When there’s a change, it’s a different mood and it’s really nice,” the United captain said when asked about the team’s current transformation after Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial investment was finalized earlier this year. Starting off is always the greatest because that’s when everyone gets to know each other and try out different approaches to the task at hand.
“But then we need to start the season off right and realize that it will get repetitive, but we must maintain the same level of enthusiasm that we had at the beginning.”
Fernandes discussed his unique bond with Darren Fletcher, someone he makes an effort to converse with and learn from every day.
Since Fletcher was a part of United’s most successful era, Fernandes finds it touching that Fletcher told him he deserved to be at the club.
A dream come true when I joined United,” Fernandes said, reflecting on his time there thus far. I think it’s well knowledge that playing for Manchester United in the Premier League was my lifelong goal. I was given the opportunity to assemble that. I aspired to be a Premier League player, and Manchester United was my beloved club. It is very incredible to be able to do both.
My feelings for the club are unchanged, of course. It has expanded. For the simple reason that you become familiar with the neighborhood, the supporters, and the local culture. They approach each day in the same manner; they approach game day in the same way. It’s unique compared to other countries.
Manchester is home to the 29-year-old and his wife, he said.
