Chelsea’s transfer disaster might become a star under Enzo Maresca’s tutelage

For the 2025–26 season, Chelsea spent heavily on attackers once again, adding Joao Felix and Pedro Neto, two seasoned pros, and Estevao Willian, a promising Brazilian prospect.

Chelsea is still on the hunt for additional elite attackers. In addition to Jadon Sancho, another prominent winger, Chelsea have been connected to Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen, two great attackers, following their agreement to trade Romelu Lukaku to Napoli.

In the second leg of the Conference League playoff, Chelsea lost 2-1 to Servette despite putting up a solid performance against Wolves, putting up six goals. The opposition was significantly easier.

Chelsea advanced to the next round without this loss because they defeated Servette 2-0 in the first leg, but the outcome does show how far the Blues have to go with new boss Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea only avoided humiliation and perhaps elimination at the hands of the Swiss team thanks to Mykhaylo Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku, two of the few players who had solid performances in the loss.

The penalty was won by Mudryk’s deft touch and nimble footwork. Chelsea maintained their lead thanks to Nkunku’s goal, and he displayed a level of sharpness and talent throughout the match.

Contrast this with Mudryk’s Premier League debut, during which he was substituted at halftime in a 6-2 victory over Wolves and failed to contribute in any way, despite his offensive teammates’ utter dominance.

Enzo Maresca once again ripped into Mudryk after the match, informing the audience in no uncertain terms that Chelsea’s high-priced acquisition from Shakhtar Donetsk was disappointing.

When that happened, many speculated that Chelsea may try to move Jadon Sancho to Manchester United in exchange for Mudryk, loan him out to a team where he could get his act together, or perhaps shortlist him.

While Chelsea were much worse as a team, Mudryk earned the start against Servette and improved noticeably from his disastrous performance against Wolves the previous Saturday.

Despite Chelsea’s enormous disappointment with Mudryk’s performance—particularly in light of the over 100 million euros spent on him—he is not a mirage.

After impressing in crucial Champions League matches against teams like Real Madrid, Mudryk was a transfer target for Arsenal and Chelsea. He eventually decided to join Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Maybe Maresca is trying to motivate the gifted left winger by using a more “tough love” style of coaching, in the belief that a change of direction from Mauricio Pochettino can inspire the Ukrainian striker.

Have in mind that Mudryk is still rather young, at 23 years old. Chelsea would be wise to attempt to bring out his potential rather than dismiss him as a bust and question his talent level from the start. Simply put, a sale would be completely fruitless given that they would not recoup their initial investment in Mudryk at this time.

Assuming the surrounding changes can aid Mudryk in collaborating with teammates and Maresca’s “tough love” gradually compels him to concentrate, he should have no trouble finding his footing at Chelsea.

Mudryk has always thrived when given room to run and use his athleticism, thus Maresca could be able to assist him reach his full potential in this area. Both the technical quality and ingenuity were on point during the touches versus Servette.

If anything, Mudryk seems to be in need of the same kind of undivided attention that Maresca has received in order to realize his full potential. We should be hopeful for a rapid turnaround under a manager who is prepared to confront and push Mudryk because his problems are more psychological than physical or technical. The biggest obstacle that Mudryk will face is complacency.
