Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has reportedly received a significant contract offer from a club as he attempts to relaunch his career.
Martial’s contract with Manchester United expired at the end of last season, prompting his release.
Despite being linked with multiple clubs throughout the summer transfer window, the 28-year-old is still unsigned.
Greek site SPORT24 reports that AEK Athens has made an approach for the forward within the previous week.
In an attempt to persuade Martial to sign, AEK Athens reportedly gave him the most lucrative deal in the club’s history.
Former Man United star Anthony Martial has reportedly received a sizeable contract offer
Greek club AEK Athens is said to have offered Martial their highest ever deal.
The deal apparently exceeds the club’s current top earning, former Tottenham player Erik Lamela.
Lamela reportedly earns €2 million (£1.7 million) per year.
If Martial joins AEK Athens, he will likely take a significant wage reduction, as he currently earns £250,000 per week at Manchester United.
The AEK Athens move for Martial is apparently deemed independent from the Greek club’s pursuit of Chelsea attacker David Datro Fofana.
According to Sport24, Martial is concerned about heading to Greece’s Super League at the age of 28.
Manchester United signed Martial, then one of the most promising young players in world football, from Monaco in 2015 for a sum that could have reached £58 million with add-ons.
He scored 17 goals in his debut season, but was frustratingly unreliable near the conclusion of his Old Trafford career, with a declining goal total and mounting injury problems.
Martial’s former Sevilla team-mate Erik Lamela is currently the top earner at AEK Athens
Martial previously clashed with Lamela during Manchester United’s 6-1 defeat at Tottenham in 2020.
His finest season in United colours came in 2019-20, when he scored 23 goals under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but he struggled to recreate that performance.
Martial, who scored 90 goals in 317 games for United, spent time on loan at Sevilla during the 2021-22 season, where he was a teammate of Lamela.
The Frenchman had previously battled with the Argentine during the Red Devils United’s 6-1 defeat to Tottenham in 2020, which resulted in Martial getting dismissed.
Martial has been linked with Atlanta and Lille in recent weeks, but no deal has been confirmed.
