Corey Seager was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to discomfort in his right hip, an issue that might potentially end his third season with the Texas Rangers. The decision came just before the Rangers’ final game against the New York Yankees. Seager did not play in Tuesday night’s game, having been the designated hitter in the first game of the series.
He also missed the opener against Oakland on Friday because of the same hip issue. Manager Bruce Bochy revealed that Seager has been dealing with soreness for approximately a month.
While general manager Chris Young stated that the team does not yet have a definitive medical diagnosis to confirm that Seager’s season is over with 23 games remaining, Bochy hinted that this could indeed be the case.
“It’s good that we are taking care of it,” Bochy remarked. “We want to address this now so he can recover fully over the winter and be ready for next spring.”
The decision to place Seager on the injured list was also influenced by the fact that he missed nearly all of spring training due to a January surgery to repair a sports hernia, as noted by Young, Bochy, and Seager.
When asked about the possibility of returning to play this season, Seager replied, “I hope so,” but emphasized his focus on the offseason.
“You can’t miss two offseasons,” Seager explained. “You need to be healthy and get back into training and shape. I didn’t have much preparation last year before the season, and it’s crucial to have that buildup.”
The Rangers share Seager’s concerns, given his interrupted offseason due to the hernia surgery, which caused him to miss most of spring training.
“The season extended longer than expected, which was great,” said General Manager Chris Young. “However, when Corey’s offseason training resumed, he started feeling discomfort. By then, it was late in the offseason, which wasn’t anyone’s fault—just the way the timing worked out.”
Young continued, “If he’s facing an issue now and we’re still diagnosing it, it’s crucial to understand the problem and develop a rehab plan to ensure he has a normal offseason.”
As of their final game against the Yankees, Texas was 8.5 games behind the last American League wild card spot. With Seager sidelined, Josh Smith will see increased playing time at shortstop.
