In his debut game as England manager, Lee Carsley will likely start Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish, two players who were cut from the squad for Euro 2024.
In Saturday’s Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland, the interim head coach is contemplating starting Anthony Gordon, and Trent Alexander-Arnold will finally get to play right back, his chosen position.
Gareth Southgate’s squad for Germany 2024 was notable for excluding Grealish and Maguire.
Gordon, an attacker for Newcastle, is also expected to start after seeing limited action at the European Championships.
Asking Gordon about his playing time during the Euros, he said, “I was disappointed” to ITV.It’s just because I have unwavering faith in my abilities. Especially considering how far I had come in the previous season, I felt unbeatable.
After the first half, I felt like nobody could stand up for me or handle me.I was prepared to go out there and make an impression while also contributing to the national team’s victory. So, it was disheartening to see my concept turned into something completely different.
Both Grealish and Carsley have already committed to playing aggressively, with Grealish slated to play behind captain Harry Kane in an advanced center attacking role.
The 50-year-old has acknowledged that some have exploited Southgate’s pragmatic style as a weapon, but he has also stated that his players’ ball control has impressed him in his three practices thus far.
As Carsley put it, “We have spoken a lot about being excited, playing with energy, playing with control.”.
