Joshua Zirkzee, a Manchester United transfer option, surfaces following Jim Ratcliffe’s dissatisfaction
Joshua Zirkzee, a striker, was the first big addition to Manchester United this summer. He arrived at Old Trafford on July 1.
For £36.5 million, Zirkzee left Bologna to join the team. The Dutchman was brought in to provide additional firepower when Anthony Martial left the team after his contract expired. Zirkzee was not the only forward United was considering, though.ESPN claims that Jonathan David of Lille was also a target and that he “remained a live option right up until Zirkzee was signed.” According to the article, Zirkzee was United’s top choice to take Martial’s place, and Ivan Toney of Brentford was also considered for the position.
After being judged “too expensive,” Toney ultimately completed a £40 million transfer to Al-Ahli, a Saudi Pro League team. After agreeing to a four-year contract that extends until 2028, the striker now earns over £400,000 every week. It’s also reported that, before to the FA Cup final, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who purchased a minority share in the club and now oversees all football operations, expressed his annoyance with United’s “up to full speed” hiring practices.
Nevertheless, United had a productive transfer window, adding Manuel Ugarte, Noussair Mazraoui, Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, and Matthijs de Ligt. Additionally, they sold players like Mason Greenwood, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Scott McTominay and released Martial and Raphael Varane.
“We’d already lost two or three key players: Varane, Martial, and [Sofyan] Amrabat, from memory had gone, so there was a center back, a central midfield player/six, and a center forward were the key and we felt we probably would need another center back as well,” sporting director Dan Ashworth said, reflecting on the club’s transfer business. As I entered, those were essentially the pre-agreed positions since those were the four crucial positions we really needed to enhance in this window. We achieved that by adding Zirkzee, Ugarte, Yoro, and De Ligt.
We wanted to bolster our depth and quality in those locations, in part because of the view and in part because of the exits. Aaron had a year remaining on his contract and the chance to walk on, so we were able to shake things up and swap that position to Mazraoui and Wan-Bissaka.”
