Wyatt Langford doesn’t have the typical physique of a track star. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 220 pounds, he has powerful legs and robust forearms, which give him more of a linebacker’s build. In fact, Langford has mentioned that he would have played as a middle linebacker if he had chosen to focus on football rather than baseball.
Despite his football-like build, Langford is also one of the fastest players in the sport.
Langford — whose four hits in two games were the most among all Rangers batters in their series loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field — stole a season-high two bases and chased down a hard-hit Eugenio Suárez fly ball at the left field wall in Texas’ 6-0 loss on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, in a 14-4 loss, Langford raced toward foul territory in shallow left to make a sliding catch on an Adrian Del Castillo pop fly.
The rookie’s 29.8 feet-per-second sprint speed is the fastest on the Rangers and the 10th fastest in the major leagues, according to Baseball Savant, and his 14 steals this season ranks third among American League rookies. And he’s just the fifth player in club history to record double-digit home runs and stolen bases in their age 22 season or younger.
“He’s a powerful runner,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday. “A lot of runners, you know, they just have a graceful look I guess, like antelopes. He’s just a powerful runner, that’s why I love watching him run.”
