Ben Chilwell and Enzo Maresca came to an amicable agreement on Monday so that Chilwell wouldn’t have to spend the next four months without playing football.
Maresca had approved the sale of Chilwell in the summer, but the Blues were left unsure of what to do when no deal was made.
When it became apparent that the 27-year-old would not be going on loan, he was added to the Premier League squad that was filed last week, which is when he made his comeback. Earlier, when Chelsea was still seeking to transfer him on, he had been disappointed not to be chosen in the Conference League team submitted to UEFA.
Chilwell may now live in hope of earning some first-team time after returning to training at Cobham, even though it means he cannot play in the European competition. This is especially true when Chelsea plays Barrow in the Carabao Cup the following week.Maresca has stated that he is not what he wants in a left back, therefore Chelsea may still look for a prospective suitor in January.
In the event of an injury crisis, however, the England international would be a Premier League possibility. This week, Chelsea is preparing in preparation for their midday match against West Ham on Saturday.
Jadon Sancho participated in an indoor recovery session on Monday instead of going outside with Chilwell and Co.
Sancho’s 45 minutes against Bournemouth were his first in the Premier League this season, and he is still working his way up to full fitness.
