Geron Sands apologized. He’d done this before and recognized that he’d done it again. He turned a run-of-the-mill prompt — this one, from The Dallas Morning News, asked to recount the first time he met Texas Rangers prospect Sebastian Walcott — into a minutes-long soliloquy of praise.
“He has the thing you can’t describe,” said Sands, the co-founder of Bahamas-based International Elite Sports Academy, who mentored Walcott. “It’s that thing you can’t describe. You just know it’s something, and he has that.”
It’s easier to contextualize now.
Walcott, who turned 18 in March, was the second-youngest position player in the High-A South Atlantic League this season and one of its best hitters.
He became the youngest player to appear at the Double-A level this season when he debuted with the Frisco Rough Riders last Tuesday. He can join an exclusive class that includes Elvis Andrus and Jurickson Profar — who were both opening day starting shortstops at Frisco as 19-year-olds — next spring.
