Manchester United dominated Barnsley 7-0 at Old Trafford tonight to secure their place in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round.
Fans should definitely celebrate the victory and what it means for the players involved because, although facing a weak League One team, the Reds rarely dominate a game this easily, and the scoreboard reflects that.
Throughout the match, Christian Eriksen, Alejandro Garnacho, and Marcus Rashford all scored twice; Antony’s first-half penalty kick goal was the only other goal scored.
As a result, it makes sense that the well-known bagsmen would make headlines as the sun rises tomorrow morning, but one Red in particular stands out for his incredible performance: In just 31 minutes, Bruno Fernandes produced the most opportunities of any player on the field with six.Despite being left off of the starting lineup, which allowed him to get much-needed rest, he joined the game late in the second half and went on to record five touches in the opposition’s box, provide two assists, and make four passes into the final third with an 86 percent passing accuracy, according to StatmanDave.
Let’s talk about setting an example for others.
Man Utd thrashed Barnsley 7-1 in their League Cup victory
While United went wild, Fulham created unwelcome history when they lost to lower-division Preston 16–15 on penalties following the longest shoot-out in tournament history.
United never seemed like they would pull off an upset against their third-tier opponents at Old Trafford, as they languished in 10th place in the Premier League following two losses in their opening four games.
After United’s victory over Southampton in the Premier League on Saturday, Rashford, Antony, and Alejandro Garnacho all scored goals before halftime to essentially secure United’s second consecutive victory.
Following the break, Rashford and Garnacho each scored once more, and Christian Eriksen’s brace completed United’s greatest victory since manager Erik ten Hag joined from Ajax in 2022.
“This team is playing together for the first time. We scored some fantastic goals as we figured out our tendencies,” Ten Hag remarked.
“We were brutal and played at a high speed. The important thing was to have the correct mindset and to focus entirely.
“The previous season was challenging for all of us, but we managed to win the FA Cup. We achieved our goal, and for this season, we want to go farther.
Ten Hag started eight players, including midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who had arrived from Paris Saint-Germain, and gave him his first start despite his vow to take the League Cup “very seriously”.
United got off to a fast start in their attempt to win the championship for the second time in three seasons, and Ten Hag’s array of substitutions proved to be no obstacle.
The Dutchman had compared Rashford to a bottle of tomato ketchup following the player’s season-opening goal against Southampton last Saturday.
After breaking his duck last season, Ten Hag predicted Rashford would have a run of success. Rashford had struggled to score during that campaign.
In the sixteenth minute, Garnacho’s deft pass found Rashford, who cut past Marc Roberts and fired high past Barnsley goalkeeper Gaga Slonina into the upper corner, confirming his forecast.
The 26-year-old had not scored in back-to-back games since March.
During his first start of the season, the out-of-favor Brazilian international Antony scored a penalty in the 35th minute when Slonina fouled him while he was running through on goal.
Another Everton crashIn first-half stoppage time, Garnacho scored United’s third goal with a close-range shot.
In the 49th minute, Garnacho scored again, pouncing on a pass from Eriksen to slide the ball home.
With a brilliant finish after receiving a pass from Garnacho, Rashford scored his brace in the 58th minute.
Eriksen skillfully finished two clinical ends in the 81st and 85th minutes, with Barnsley completely outclassed.
At Deepdale, Preston defeated Fulham following a 1-1 draw, requiring a total of 34 penalties.
Following a miss from each team, Timothy Castagne of Fulham rocketed over and Ryan Ledson of Preston calmly scored the victory at 15-15 in the shootout.
The prior record for the League Cup shootout was achieved in 2016, when Derby defeated Carlisle 14–13.
After a goalless 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, Southampton prevailed 6-5 on penalties, and Everton’s miserable start to the season showed no signs of stopping.
Abdoulaye Doucoure’s header in the 20th minute gave Sean Dyche’s team, who are currently bottom of the Premier League after four straight losses, the lead.
However, Southampton—who have also lost all four of their league games this season—won it in the shootout after Alex McCarthy saved Ashley Young’s penalty just before halftime.
England winger Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace scored in a 2-1 triumph over his previous team, QPR.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford defeated third-tier Leyton Orient 3-1 after overcoming an early scare thanks to a goal from Fabio Carvalho, the team’s first goal of the season.
