This season, Mateo Kovacic has emerged as a key member of the Manchester City squad.
Kovacic has participated in six of City’s eight games this season across all competitions, five of which he has started.
The midfield player was acquired by the Citizens from Chelsea, a Premier League team, for £25 million during the summer transfer window of 2023.
In 46 games in all competitions during his rookie season at the Manchester club, the 30-year-old finished with three goals and one assist.
After winning the Premier League title with Pep Guardiola’s team the previous season, the Croatian has now spoken out about his sentiments for his former club. After joining Man City, Mateo Kovacic discussed his love for Chelsea. In a recent video that was posted on City’s official YouTube channel, Kovacic was questioned about his experience scoring for the team during their 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on opening weekend. In his own words, “It’s especially since Chelsea is a club I really appreciate and that has given me a lot of confidence.”
“I played there for five years, so it’s a club I’ll never forget. It’s always a pleasure to play at Stamford Bridge, and I’m glad I can do it now since I’m wearing a City shirt and a member of this fantastic team.
“Scoring at Stamford Bridge is a pleasant and memorable experience for me.”
What Kovacic said about leading City to the Premier League titleThe Croatian played at Chelsea for five years, from 2018 to 2023, making 221 appearances overall. During that time, he scored six goals, provided fifteen assists, and won four European titles.
Kovacic recently stated that his greatest moment since joining City is his first Premier League title, something he hasn’t done with Chelsea.
The midfielder’s admission that he still admires Chelsea and what they allowed him to accomplish while he was a member of the team demonstrates his level of respect for the organization even after he left to join City and accomplish in his first season under Guardiola’s leadership what he was unable to accomplish in five years at Chelsea.
Going forward, it would be even more evident how wise a signing Kovacic was for the Blues and why Chelsea would have erred in letting him leave if he were to go on to play a major part in City’s possible win of a fifth Premier League title in a row.
