Lingard’s extraordinary journey began when his grandfather committed himself to helping the young boy from Warrington achieve his dream of becoming a professional player.

His grandpa, a former powerlifter for Great Britain, set up a makeshift gym in a garden shed so that Lingard could gain muscle.

A frequent visit to McDonald’s, in his grandson’s mind, would do the same thing.

It was my diminutive stature that was the main issue, the midfielder explained. I was unable to gain weight. Despite chowing down on McDonald’s, I remained incredibly underweight. Time and again, my grandfather would ask, “When are you going to accompany me to the garden?” “You should put on some muscle.”
