After captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off late in the first half, Manchester United lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. Fernandes believed that the decision to fire him was “not a good decision” and that it was “never a red card”. While Fernandes recognized that playing with just 10 men was “tough” for his teammates, United manager Erik ten Hag also stated that he believed it was the incorrect decision.
Captain of Manchester United Bruno Fernandes claimed that James Maddison, a midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur, told him that his ejection against the Spurs was “never a red card.”
Just before halftime, Fernandes was shown a straight red card for a harsh tackle on Maddison. Fernandes seemed to be slipping when he reached out and grabbed Maddison with his boot.
At the time of the dismissal, United was down 1-0 and ultimately lost 3-0.
Fernandes responded to a question over the red card later on Sky Sports, saying, “It’s a clear foul but never a red card.”Even Maddison, upon standing up, acknowledged that there was a foul but no red card. As you can see, there is never a red card, and if there were, we would need to examine a lot of other instances.”I’ve been kicked a lot, but I’ve never seen it happen as quickly as a red card.”There isn’t much contact. I understand if he wants to give me a yellow since it’s a counterattack, but why doesn’t VAR bring the referee to the screen? It’s not a wise choice in my opinion.”
“The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call of serious foul play,” the Premier League said in a statement.
“I left my team-mates down with one man down,” Fernandes continued. It was difficult for them, and I do appreciate everything they accomplished on the pitch.”We had a poor start to the match. When the score is 11 against 11, and the advantage is theirs, the red card scenario arises.”They tried, and they did extremely well. We gave up two more goals, but it was challenging to cover every area.
We can learn a lot of positive lessons from this. I’m proud of the team because they demonstrated resilience.”
With two victories from six games, United is ranked 12th in the Premier League table; the loss puts m
ore pressure on manager Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag stated that he believed the game was significantly affected by the red card.
“With [Alejandro] Garnacho and [Joshua] Zirkzee, we had opportunities to tie the score and even win the game. However, the game was altered by the red card, Ten Hag said to Sky Sports.
“I don’t consider it to be a red card. We could still win because we had plenty of opportunities before that and the score was only 1-0. It significantly affected the game.”
Next up for United are two away games in the Premier League on Sunday against Aston Villa and a live match against FC Porto in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday and Sunday, respectively, on TNT Sports and discovery+.
