Texas Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford was honored as both the American League Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month for his outstanding performance in September, the league announced on Tuesday.
Langford, who was also unanimously chosen as the Rangers’ Player of the Month, posted an impressive slash line of .300/.386/.610 with a league-leading eight home runs in September. This recognition marks the first time a Ranger has earned AL Player of the Month honors since Shin-Soo Choo in September 2015.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy praised Langford’s development, saying, “It’s been exciting to watch his growth. We all love his game. Seeing him get comfortable in the major leagues, from tracking balls in the outfield to running the bases, has been great to witness. Offensively, as he’s gotten more reps, his confidence has grown, especially when he started hitting with power. Everything has improved.”
It is the 11th instance in the history of the awards for a player to claim both Player and Rookie honors in the same month.
Langford, the first to do it in a Rangers uniform, joins a list that includes the likes of Buster Posey, Mike Trout and Aaron Judge. Aristides Aquino was the most recent to claim the accolade, doing it with Cincinnati in 2019.
