Young: Rangers Will Focus on Pitching and Consider Reuniting with Eovaldi and Heaney

The Rangers went from being at the top of Major League Baseball to missing the playoffs within a single season, largely due to an offense that struggled throughout.

Regulars like Adolis Garcia and Jonah Heim had difficulties at the plate, and injuries to key players such as Corey Seager, Josh Jung, and Evan Carter further hampered the team. As noted by Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, the Rangers specifically struggled against four-seam fastballs.

Despite these challenges, Chris Young, the president of baseball operations, maintained an optimistic outlook during his end-of-season press conference regarding the current hitters on the roster. “The biggest remedy, in my opinion, is improving the guys we currently have,” Young stated (via Grant).

The recently extended leader of the Rangers’ baseball operations emphasized that enhancing the lineup internally is a “heavy priority” as they head into the next season.

When it comes to external additions, the focus will primarily be on bolstering the pitching staff.

MLB.com’s Kennedi Landri reported that Young expressed a desire to retain impending free agents Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney.

Eovaldi activated a $20 million player option this season after accumulating a total of 300 innings between 2023 and 2024, but he is widely expected to decline it in favor of free agency, unless a potential extension is offered by the Rangers. Heaney, on the other hand, exercised a player option after the 2023 season and made 31 solid starts in the rotation this year.
