The away team faced a strong Scottish defense at Hampden Park, and the evening was incredibly frustrating for them.
Portugal drew 0-0 away to Scotland in their most recent Nations League match, showing weakness.
For Roberto Martinez’s troops, it was a tough night as they found it difficult to finish their games against the Tartan Army.
Diogo Jota and Cristiano Ronaldo, for example, had opportunities, but the Al-Nassr player in particular was not wearing his shooting boots.
Scotland launched a good number of attacks as well, particularly in the first half. Several times, their pressure caught Portugal off guard, and Scott McTominay had a great chance to score early on.
Apart from a few home team breaks, Portugal dominated the second half. Martinez gave his team complete control by bringing on Rafael Leao, Bernardo Silva, and Ruben Neves, but they were still unable to make the breakthrough.
While their opponents will be disappointed with the outcome and their flawless start to the new Nations League season, Scotland will be pleased with the point overall.
Portugal’s Hampden Park players are rated by GOAL. Diogo Costa (7/10):
made a couple significant stops in front of their home crowd from what was a risky Scotland side.
Joao Cancelo (rated 6/10):
Portugal’s attacking danger mostly came from the opposite wing, and Cancelo’s inverted role rarely produced much of an impact.
Ruben Dias (7 out of 10):
displayed the same composure under Pep Guardiola to play around Scotland’s push while providing a respectable defense.
Antonio Silva (7 out of 10):
did not make many mistakes, but Scott McTominay was a constant menace in the box, and he was caught in between crosses a few times.
Nuno Mendes (7 out of 10):
was constantly trying to move forward and frequently beat his man, but he also made his defense vulnerable to a counterattack.Bruno Fernandez (5 out of 10):
played a bigger part at Manchester United than he is accustomed to, but in the end, he was unable to provide Portugal with the breakthrough they required.
Joao Palhinha (6 out of 10):
received his usual yellow card, patrolled the middle, and made few inventive passes.
Vitinha (7/10):
may go unnoticed, but was crucial in retrieving the ball and launching Portugal’s offensive.
